So they probably drew in a few willing Fiat dealers dangling the Alfa future in front of them. It would have worked for me.

Yup, Cary is pretty good size now. It is in the Auto Mall on 64 with the rest of the dealerships. About a mile from the 64/US1 intersection. How long has it been since you lived there?
